UC Introduces Butch Jones

One day after Interim Coach Jeff Quinn met with the Cincinnati media, the University of Cincinnati rolled out the red carpet to introduce the 38th football coach in program history. Late last night, local media outlets began to report that Athletic Director Mike Thomas and Central Michigan coach Butch Jones had reached an agreement for Jones to succeed Brian Kelly, who left for Notre Dame.

Mike Thomas, and newly installed university president Greg Williams, were ebullient in their praise for the man who has won two MAC Championships in three years. BearcatInsider had the chance to talk with Coach Jones following the press conference.

BCI asked Jones about the possibility of retaining key staff members from his CMU staff including defensive coordinator Tim Banks, linebackers coach Mark Elder and strength and conditioning coach Dave Lawson. Jones had this response.

"I've had the opportunity to speak with much of the staff (at CMU) and we'll take that stuff day by day, but yes, I have spoken with them."

Jones announced during his press conference that he will retain secondary coach and former Colerain High School coach Kerry Coombs, who will have the same duties under Jones. That announcement brought applause from many of the UC supporters at the press conference.

Additionally, BCI had the chance to ask a question that was on the minds of many Bearcat fans feeling jilted by Brian Kelly's departure. Would Jones take Kelly up on his offer of starting a UC vs. Notre Dame matchup?

"Sure I'd love to have the opportunity to play Notre Dame down the road. I know our schedules our set for a while, but I'd love to have that opportunity," said Jones.
