So what does Coach Jones bring to the table? We asked a few people who know Jones.
B.J. Payne head football coach at Lexington (Ohio) High School was ecstatic with word that Jones would be the next head coach at Cincinnati.
"Butch Jones is a great coach and one I have a lot of respect for," Said Payne late Tuesday night. "We took some of our kids up to Central Michigan for camp and you can just see the energy Butch has for the game of football. He's a cool customer but on a can of Red Bull."
Payne was not the only person Bearcat Insider spoke to about Jones on Tuesday night. Longtime Ohio football recruiting scout John McCallister of the McCallister Scouting Report had nothing but positive things to say about Jones.
"I've known Butch for several years and he's a real quality guy. He's worked real hard over the years and I'm not surprised Cincinnati found Jones to be the right guy to follow Brian Kelly."
As many know my brother Jeff Berk is a former player at West Virginia University. While Butch wasn't at WVU during my brothers playing career, he did have some contact with him during Jones times of recruiting Ohio for the Mountaineers.
"Coach Jones wasn't at West Virginia when I was as he came in just as my career was ending. But he recruited Ohio and made several trips into Wayne High School and we spoke on several occasions. Coach Jones was always very positive and from talking with some of my former teammates I found they had nothing but positive things to say about his coaching style and the type of person he is."
As per our breakdown Butch Jones has been a head coach for three seasons. His record stands at 26-13 with three bowl game berths including this seasons GMAC Bowl. Jones also has two Mid-American Conference Championships under his belt showing the ability to win a conference title. He's worked in the Big East Conference at both Rutgers as a GA and also West Virginia as a wide receivers coach.
One of the biggest questions asked about the coaching change at Cincinnati is the loss of Paul Longo. While we agree this is a big loss, we're also very confident in the ability of CMU's current strength coach Dave Lawson who is one of the best.
Bearcat Insider knows the ability of Lawson from his time working at West Virginia. The rest of the staff will be a question mark until Coach Jones releases those he'll be bringing with him.
