After a slow start the Bearcats got things going against the Herd. Who did the Insider feel deserved to earn Game Balls?

Game MVP Game Ball

Chazz Anderson: QB

While most of the talk was about the other redshirt freshman quarterback, Chazz Anderson went about his business just as he has since arriving on campus a little over a year ago.  Friday night Anderson took over the reigns of the Bearcats offense and while it sputtered at times followed the game plan set by Brian Kelly and took the Bearcats to their fourth victory of the season.  On the night Anderson was 16-26-1 for 158 yards and 2 touchdowns.  He also ran for a score and showed poise throughout the game.

Offensive Game Balls

Jacob Ramsey, John Goebel, Isaiah Pead: RB

The Bearcats running game showed up against Marshall as the trio each had parts of the game where they were in control.  Goebel’s touchdown run was a thing of beauty to watch and what this offense is capable of doing.  Ramsey showed his strength as a running back coming up one yard short of 100 for the night.  Pead got a Brian Kelly baptism and would carry the ball eleven times for 59 yards late in the game.

Brian Kelly: Head Coach

As we wrote early in the week Brian Kelly was no stranger to having a redshirt freshman take over his offense.  The head coach did a great job of getting Anderson ready and made sure he stayed within himself throughout the course of the game.  This is the fifth quarterback to earn Kelly a victory since he became the Bearcats head coach.

Jeff Linkenbach, Alex Hoffman, Chris Jurek, Trevor Canfield, Khalil El-Amin: OL

With a first time starter in Hoffman in the starting lineup, the Bearcats offensive line helped the team power to over 200 yards rushing.  One downside was the three sacks given up but overall anytime you can put a new piece of the puzzle in place and have success is a major positive.  Hoffman will learn from this experience and help give the Bearcats more depth along the line.

Defensive Game Balls

Torry Cornett: LB

Cornett was all over the field on Friday night and it showed up in the team’s defensive stats as he recorded 9 total tackles with one for a loss and also a pass breakup.  This was Cornett’s best game of his college career.

Mike Mickens: CB

The senior again did a great job of helping in run support picking up 9 total tackles to go with an interception and two pass breakups.

Corey Smith: LB

The senior was also flying all over the field and posted 6 total tackles with one for a loss and two pass breakups.

Aaron Webster: S

The talk of the week was the lack of solid play from the safety position.  Webster had shown early in his career that he could be a big-time player at the position before going down with a knee injury.  This is the first time the Michigan native looked to be back to 100% and his performance on the field was super despite giving up the big touchdown play.

Lamonte Nelms, Alex Daniels, Connor Barwin: DE

The trio placed pressure on the Marshall offense throughout the night and combined for 9 total tackles 2 sacks and 3 tackles for loss.

Special Teams Game Balls

Kevin Huber: P

The senior again showed why he’s one if not the best punter in the country with an average of 43.5 yards and 2 punts trapped inside the twenty yard line.

Connor Barwin: Punt Block

Barwin's block and almost block place the first points on the board and set the tone for the rest of the special teams on the night.

Collin McCafferty:

McCafferty made one of the most aggressive tackles when he body slammed one of the Marshall players on a return.  This kid has made himself into a top college player from his special teams play.
