UC 13th After First Round Of UK Bluegrass Invitational Tucker shoots round of 78 to lead Cincinnati LEXINGTON, KY - The University of Cincinnati men's golf team traveled south to Kentucky to take part in the UK Bluegrass Invitational at UK Big Blue G.C. on Sunday (Apr. 13). After the first round of play, UC stands in 12th place with a team score of 319 on the Par 72, 7,013 yard golf course. Cincinnati's top performer on the first day was junior Blake Tucker (Findlay, OH/Owens CC) who shot a 78 which placed him in a tie for 24th position. Tucker shot identical 39's on the front and back to finish at plus-six. One shot behind Tucker, sit Joe Kastelic (Newton, NC/Fred T. Ford) and Ryan Cahill (Columbus, OH/Hilliard Davidson) who each shot and opening round 79. Kastelic opened with a 44 on the front nine but was able to recover by shooting an one-under on the back nine to finish at plus-seven for the Invitational. Cahill went out with a score of 39 and finished the home holes at 40 strokes. Each are tied in 33rd position Rounding out the Bearcats' day were Alberto Fernandez (Gijorn, Spain/La Corolla) and Kane Volsky (Beachwood, OH/Beachwood) who shot an 83 and 87, respectively. Fernandez sits in a tie for 66th place, while Volsky stands in a tie for 85th position. The Invitational was originally scheduled to play 36 holes on Sunday with the remaining 18 to be played on Monday (Apr. 14) but due to poor weather conditions the second round was cut short. Streaking CINCINNATI— The University of Cincinnati was poised to repeat its winning formula when it loaded the bases with one away in the eighth inning, but Pittsburgh starting pitcher Corey Baker retired the next two batters to halt Cincinnati and go on to a 3-2 win. Baker went on to earn a complete-game victory and stopped UC’s win streak at seven straight games. In the top half of the fifth inning, the left-handed Warner pulled a leadoff home run over the right field fence to give Pitt a 2-1 edge Smith allowed the next batter to walk, and after a failed pickoff attempt, Adam Calez replaced Smith with one out and a Panther runner standing at third base. Calez retired the next two batters and kept the difference at 2-1. Tony Campana started the bottom half of the fifth with a base hit. The senior center fielder moved to second on a ground out and went to third base courtesy of a balk by Baker. Josh Calez (1-1) worked a scoreless two and one-third innings before allowing a single and double in the top of the seventh. Evan Sanford took the mound in place of Calez and threw two strikes before a wild pitch went to the backstop and Sean Conley scored from third base with the go-ahead run. In the bottom of the eighth inning, UC used back-to-back singles by Cameron Satterwhite and Spina after a leadoff pop out. Spina finished the afternoon 3-for-3 and scored a run. An error on the infield allowed Baker to reach base and extend the inning. Pitt’s Baker struck out the next batter and induced a groundout to work of the jam. Jamel Scott kept Baker (2-1) allowed seven UC hits over nine innings to garner his second triumph of the season. The Pitt righthander allowed one earned run, struck out four and walked one.
Bearcats Come From Behind To Defeat
UC came out in the second half and quickly tied the game in the 51st minute. Nick Weightman ( In the 74th minute Branden Stelmak (Broadview Heights, OH/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) capitalized on a run out and a well placed ball by Weightman, to score the winning goal in the match. Head Coach Hylton Dayes on the Bearcat victory, "We're certainly pleased with how the game ended.
UC Needs Extra Innings to Outduel Pitt, 3-2 The Bearcats' half of the sixth opened with a walk by Kevin Johnson. A single off the bat of Mike Spina advanced Johnson to second. After a four-pitch walk to Tyler Goodro, the bases were loaded for Ryan Baker. Baker singled through the left side and Johnson scored to put UC in front 2-1. Attempting to score from second on the play, Spina a strike from Conley in left field retired the junior at the plate and stalled Geglein finished the eighth inning on his way to completing three and one-third innings on the mound to earn the decision for the Bearcats. The win marked the first of the season for Geglein (1-0). In relief of Brant, who left the game with one out in the fifth, Pitt's David Kaye tossed four and two-thirds of scoreless relief. Brant allowed two runs on five hits, with four walks and four strikeouts. Kaye allowed four hits in relief before giving way to Ricky Breymeir (2-2) in the bottom of the 11th. Scott finished with two runs batted in and extended his team-high hitting streak to 10 consecutive games. The Bearcats left fielder has reached safely in 17 of his last 18 games. Winners of 13 of their last 15 games, the Bearcats go for the three-game sweep against the Panthers on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Kickoff for the second annual Bearcat Bowl is 7 p.m. Bearcat Bowl II is the culmination of ONN launched its 24-hour news service in May 1997, becoming the first statewide news channel in the country. The channel is seen in the markets of UC returns 16 starters and 44 letterwinners from the 2007 squad that proved to be one of the most successful in the history of UC football.
