The 2008 Bearcat Football recruiting class on paper is said to be one of their best ever. Joining that class was five local players; Evan Davis (Colerain), Danny Milligan (St. Xavier), Brandon Mills (Colerain), JK Shaffer (LaSalle) and Nick Truesdell (Anderson).
The day started with a 7:00 AM signing ceremony at Colerain High School. Head Coach Tom Bolden saw twelve of his players sign letters of intent (LOI) to play college football including future Bearcats Evan Davis and Brandon Mills. The Colerain Cardinals had an excellent season finishing 12 – 1 after a regional playoff loss to St. Xavier.
Both players figured prominently in the Cardinals success. Evan Davis, 6’4”, 250 lbs OL/DL started the year as the Cardinals Nose Tackle on Defense but switched to Center after an injury sidelined the Cardinals starter. Evan is projected to play Center for the Bearcats. Brandon Mills, 5’11”, 255 lbs DL has played DL for four years for the Cardinals. Brandon has received numerous comparisons to current Bearcat and Cardinal Alum Terrill Byrd.
LaSalle High School was the next stop for a 7:30 AM signing ceremony. Head Coach Tom Grippa saw three of his players sign LOI to play college football including future Bearcat Line Backer JK Shaffer. All three of the Lancer players were recruited by Cincinnati. Chandler Burden signed with Kentucky, Devier Posey signed with Ohio State and JK Shaffer chose to stay home and play for the Bearcats. JK Shaffer, 6’1”, 210 lbs, is projected to play weak side LB for the Bearcats.
While the Lancers ended the season at 5 – 5, two of their losses came by a total of 3 points (Indianapolis Cathedral 7 – 6 and Cleveland St. Ignatius 22 – 20). The Lancers ended their season beating Thurgood Marshall 50 – 6 with JK Shaffer setting a school record with a 95 yard interception return for a touchdown.
St Xavier High School had their signing ceremony at noon in the schools library. Head Coach Steve Specht saw fourteen Bombers sign LOI including WR, KR, PR and K Danny Milligan. Danny will be given an opportunity to play WR, KR, and PR for the Bearcats.
The Bombers completed a perfect 15 – 0 season and won the state title for the 2nd time in three years beating the Mentor Cardinals 27 – 0. It was only the 2nd time in state history that a team was shut out in the championship game and the 1st time since 1981. Danny Milligan was named the team’s Most Valuable Player.
The local players all met at Bob Evans at 9:00, hopefully starting a new tradition of local recruits gathering and showing their team spirit.
Will the Cincinnati Pipeline continue for the Bearcats?
HC Tom Bolden of Colerain says that `09 players Brandon White and Damon Sims are getting looked at by Cincinnati, Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana. Brandon White is a 6’6”, 295 lbs OL and Damon Sims, 6’4” ½, 200lbs, is a WR/TE/LB for the Cardinals.
St. Xavier has two players in the 09 class that have Cincinnati offers in LB Luke Kuechly, 6’3”, 205 lbs, and DE Patrick Muldoon 6’4”, 250 lbs. OL Matt James, 6’7”, 260 lbs of the class of `10 also holds a Bearcat offer. When asked today if he was helping to sway future Bombers to the Bearcats Danny Milligan commented that he was working very hard on Patrick Muldoon.
