Two of Cincinnati's football recruits ended their high school seasons in style on Friday by winning…
Brendon Kay Solidly a Bearcat?
Brendon talked about his team's tournament games where he must have seemed like a one man wrecking crew to Flint Powers Catholic High School in the second round. "In week #1, we blew out Richmond (58-13). In the district finals we were down 28-0 with 44 seconds before halftime. We drove 86 yards, and I had a 21 yard touchdown so we went into halftime down 28-7. We ended up winning 38-28. I had 250 yards passing, 110 rushing on 18 carries. I went 20-32 and had all five touchdowns. I ran for three and threw for two. I also had a 30 yard field goal, three sacks and an interception." Brendon is such a freakish athlete that he occasionally plays safety and defensive end.
In the regional, Marine City matched up with Alma High School, who has a nice quarterback of its own in Indiana University bound Adam Follett. Brendon won the dual by leading Marine City to a 46-35 win. "I was 20-29 for 266 yards. I had 17 carries for 81 yards and two rushing touchdowns with three passing. I also had a 40 yard field goal." Brendon hasn't kicked much this season because of a hamstring tear earlier in the season, but his career long is 42 yards last season. He resumed his kicking chores in the playoffs but doesn't expect to kick at Cincinnati next season.
Playing in Coach Kelly's spread offense is one of the attractions to Brendon's becoming a Bearcat, and it's also a similar offense to what Brendon has used to put up such big numbers in the playoffs. "Earlier in the year and in past years, we've run a modified wing T. But in the playoffs we've gone strictly with the spread. That offense at Cincinnati is a great place for a quarterback to be, and Coach Kelly is a great coach." Kay's 4.7 forty speed will make him a nice dual threat quarterback at UC.
Kay verbally committed to the Bearcats in early July and says he isn't wavering on that commitment even though other schools seem to want to get involved. "There have been quite a few phone calls to my coach, but I'm committed to Cincinnati. I don't even open the mail when I get it." Brendon said a lot of the Big Ten schools are now showing interest after only promising scholarship offers earlier in the year, but he's set on becoming a Bearcat.
Brian Kelly has three quarterbacks in his 2007-2008 recruiting class, but Brendon isn't really concerned about the competition. "Competition brings out your best, and the best person will get the job."
A tentative official visit for Brendon is set for December 7-9, but Brendon visited unofficially for the UC/Marshall game this year and has seen most of Cincinnati's games this year on television. "I've seen almost all of their games. We bought a package on Direct TV to see the games."
The basketball squad at Marine City will have to do without Kay this season as he's bypassing the sport to concentrate on football. However, playing baseball in the spring is still part of the plan. Brendon also shows his athleticism on the baseball diamond as he plays third, shortstop, first base and pitcher. He has no plans to play baseball at Cincinnati right now but didn't rule out that possibility down the road.
If Marine City wins on Saturday, the Mariners will play for the state title on Friday, November 23rd at Ford Field.
