It’s that time of the year as we look back upon 2006 and forward to 2007. But before we enter the new year lets take a look back at the Ten Biggest Stories involving the University of Cincinnati athletics. We’ll start with number 10 and then climb the ladder to the biggest story involving a Bearcat player, coach, team or something around the programs we follow.

NUMBER TEN

Looking to fit in with some of it’s Big East brethren the University of Cincinnati announced they would add women’s lacrosse beginning with the 2007-2008 academic year. The move came at the same time the department elected to discontinue it women’s rowing program after struggling to sign future student athletes to scholarships.

With women’s lacrosse rising in popularity the move by the athletics department headed by Mike Thomas fits right in with his overall CATAPULT plan focusing on winning Big East team championships with high-level academic achievement from it’s athletes. It will also help integrate with the Cincinnati community.

The Bearcats become the eighth member of the Big East to sponsor women’s lacrosse joining Georgetown, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Rutgers, Connecticut, Louisville and affiliate member Loyola-Maryland.

At this time women’s lacrosse has been an active club level sport at Cincinnati.
