Bearcat Insider last spoke to Tim Anderson as he awaited his son's return from his official visit to the University of Cincinnati. We talked again Sunday morning after Tim and Chazz had a chance to talk. "Chazz said Coach Kelly is the opposite of Coach Dantonio as far as personality goes. Chazz said he's very personable, outgoing and aggressive. He likes him a whole bunch."
One of the key points in Chazz's recruitment is the position he'll play in college. Evidently, Coach Kelly is looking to keep Chazz at quarterback. "The only purpose of his going down there or anywhere is for him to be a quarterback. They (Chazz and Coach Kelly) talked at length, about two and a half or three hours, so they talked about his offensive philosophy and the fact that he likes to throw the football. He talked about having a freshman quarterback this year who broke all kinds of records at Central Michigan. He said Chazz is the best quarterback he's seen so far on film, and he'd give Chazz the opportunity to compete for the starting job next year."
Even though the visit went very well, the Andersons are not ready to make a final decision. "We've got a lot of different options we're looking at. We're just going to take our time. We're in no rush, but he really came back with a positive attitude. It's his decision to make." Although the Andersons are in no hurry, Tim did mention a timetable for the decision. "We plan to have a decision by the first of the year."
Cincinnati sounded as if it may now be in the driver's seat for landing Chazz, but peer pressure could eventually play into the final decision according to Tim's comments. "He really, really likes Cincinnati, but one of his buddies (B. J. Cunningham) that was going to sign with him at Cincinnati has committed somewhere else (Michigan State). That had an effect momentarily on what he wanted to do, but it's not about that. It's about him making a choice for himself so we're going to let him digest everything and make the best choice for him."
B. J. Cunningham and Chazz had even talked about being roommates at Cincinnati prior to Coach Dantonio's move to East Lansing. In addition to Cunningham's working the phones, Garrett Celek has also apparently made his pitch on behalf of the Spartans. "The tight end (Garrett Celek) calls and tells Chazz how wonderful it is at Michigan State so that was involved too."
As recruiting enters a "dead period" from December 19 to January 1, it would seem the schools themselves are pretty well finished with face-to-face meetings. A dead period is defined as: Schools may not have face-to-face or in-person contact on or off campus, with either prospects or parents. Schools may write or telephone prospects during this period.
