Tyree Evans Excited to Be a Bearcat

Tyree Evans has come a long way in life and gone through many problems and issues, but the loyalty Bob Huggins and Cincinnati has shown him means a lot. He is ready to get his college career started and Bearcat Insider's Evan Daniels caught up with Evans to talk about it. THIS STORY IS FROM JAN 2005 AND BEING REPOSTED AFTER THE CURRENT EVENTS.

Dreams often don’t come true, but for Cincinnati signee Tyree Evans, his dreams are soon to become a reality.  The 6-foot-2 shooting guard will soon get a chance to put on the black and red Bearcat jersey, but until then he’s sticking to what he does best—scoring.

Up to this point Evans has put up big numbers and currently flaunts averages of 25 points, six rebounds, and three assists’ a game for Winchendon (Mass.) Prep School. 

While at George Wythe HS (VA.) the previous four years, Evans was recruited as not only a basketball player, but also a football player.  He was recruited by N.C. State, Miami, Virginia, and Virginia Tech in football but surpassed that opportunity to play college basketball and follow his dream.

“I always dreamed about playing for a big school like Cincinnati,” Evans said.  “I like their style or play, because it’s my style.  I’m happy because I know what I can do and with Coach Huggins I know I can relate to their offense.” 

But style of play wasn’t the only reason that Evans decided to become a Bearcat, it was the loyalty that Coach Huggins showed him throughout the recruiting process.

“The main reason was because they stuck with me through all my problems, and the situations I’ve been in,” Evans replied.  “They were there 100-percent.”

Ranked 70^th in his class and 16^th at his position, Evans expects to join the Bearcat squad and contribute right away.

 ”Yeah I know I can,” Evans responded when asked if he can help out the team as soon as he gets there.

“I know my work out ethic is 100% and I don’t slack.  If you slack you’re never going to get better.”

The shooting guard said that his defense used to be a sore spot in his game, but after working on it for a few years, he now lists it as his strength.

“My strengths or my biggest strength now is my defense,” Evans said.  “Three years ago, my defense wasn’t that good, but now I think I have good defense and I can score.” 

However, he did say that there is one part of his game that he wants to improve before he reaches the college campus.

“My ball handling, I can put on the floor I can drive to the basket, but it’s not where I want it to be yet.”
