With a short week ahead, the Cincinnati starters were able to only play the first half.

Cincinnati – With the Cincinnati football team facing a short week ahead in preparation for North Carolina State Thursday, they used a huge halftime lead to its advantage.

Most of the starters sat for the entire second half as the reserves were able to get plenty of snaps. With the Bearcats lacking experienced depth, especially in the trenches. The offensive line struggled early but was able to finally open up some holes as the Zips packed up the box knowing the Bearcats were going run the ball.

Freshman running back Jameel Poteat found enough room to run for a team-high 55 yards on 10 carries and one touchdown. Another freshman back, Akise Teague, added 29 yards with an average of 4.8 yards per rush.

Defensively, three of the top six tacklers were reserves that could be called upon later in the season to provide quality snaps. Freshman linebacker Clemente Cassius led the way with five tackles, while Arryn Chenault and Jordan Stepp were amongst five players tied with four tackles.

“We got our second offensive and defensive linemen, players like Cameron Beard and Eric Lefield, some snaps,” said head coach Butch Jones. “Every rep they gain is invaluable.”

The reserve defensive players were able to accumulate 30 plays in the second half, while the back-ups on offense got 32 snaps in the second half.
